Starting September 1st, yep- SEPTEMBER- “National Food Safety Month” (ha!)- the new Texas Cottage Food Law goes into effect. What has been illegal up until now will become legal. HOME BAKING BUSINESSES. Please get to know your “baker”, folks! New home based businesses are not allowed to be inspected by the health department, not required to have liability insurance, not asked to take any food handling courses, not mandated or even encouraged to install a grease trap to protect the city’s water system. Remember- one person’s idea of cleanliness in their kitchen is different than another person’s. If you choose to have the “cake lady” down the street make your next cake, please think twice, and call us!

Wow- we’ve been in business for quite a while now, and we were finally asked for the very first time to make a precious gender reveal cake! About two weeks ago, Mama-to-be, Kelly called with the request, but I had to wait until the next Monday for her sonogram results to know if I was making a pink or a blue cake… We were so excited to be a part of the special “reveal”…the couple looks so happy- congrats to you both!
(BTW- pink or blue is made with our super yummy white almond cake and a little bit of gel coloring. Anyone want to challenge us with pink and blue marble for twins??)

Learn Something New Every Day…

And for my staff- the weekend was FULL of learning! We were so excited to have the opportunity to try new things this weekend! This is why my “job” is so exciting Kristin had a FUN time (tongue in cheek) tackling a fondant camo cake- tried a few different techniques, but settled on one that made us happy. Robin crafted turrets and had the maddening task of creating gumpaste cones- but they turned out sooo pretty! Amanda sparred with ganache and won!!! I recently bought some new stencils and was able to use them on a baby shower cake- LOVE the way they turned out. Giraffe, zebra, and cheetah! We all grew as decorators this weekend and look forward to more challenges!

Just a few fun sweet creations we’ve been lucky to make in the past week or so…

Some yummy dino cupcakes for a sweet birthday boy, our signature sugar cookies with the Texas Tech Logo for an alum, and a super cute baby shower cake incorporating the shower colors and our favorite- a big fluffy edible bow!

Sweet Art bakery loves cakes that are a tad out of the ordinary, and a cake with meaning is even better. Not your traditional wedding cake, this cake appears to have already been sampled by a four footed furry creature. The bride, Robin, and groom, Jeremy are both vet techs, and met through a work function. They decided to incorporate their love of animals in a fun and “sweet” way. Of course the faux bite was a good opportunity to do some quality control sampling. YUM!

Here are a few fun cakes we created in the last couple days… Happy Birthday to Ashlyn, whose funky zebra cake had her edible initial on top, and yummy cookies n cream filling inside of the chocolate cake! Congratulations to Allison and Thomas- best wishes on a long and happy marriage! Your 4 tier topsy turvy was fun to make- and we hope you loved the sugar orchids! Looking at the picture of the gumpaste Eeyore and piglet we created, I realize that Eeyore looks quite surprised! (Maybe it’s the realization that he’ll be eaten?) …sweet success!

Here are a couple of pics of cakes we had the privilege of making this weekend. Congratulations to Amanda and Matt- her cake was a four tiered white almond and lemon cake with handmade poppies, and his was a snare drum made from a picture we were given. Congrats to Ashley and Philip whose electric guitar and 4 tiered hydrangea cake were both super fun. Also congrats to Talaya and Corey- whose 3 tier buttercream cake we did not get a chance to snap a pic of- her mom took on the task of picking it up and taking it to DeSoto- BRAVE woman! We hope it arrived safely! Best wishes to all of you!

Congrats to Victoria and Kevin, whose wedding and reception were held at the Heard Science Museum- beautiful place for a ceremony! Bride’s cake is a 3 tier buttercream creation with gumpaste fruit blossoms.
