Is a common phrase we’re piping on cakes these days! Gender reveal cakes are the fun “in” thing to do right now and can be so much fun! We’ve done cakes that look like presents, cupcakes, cakes adorned with questions marks, etc…the biggest thing they have in common? A hidden color that REVEALS the gender of the baby! We get calls from expectant moms themselves, but the best fun of all is getting a call from the doctor’s office- then it’s a surprise to EVERYONE! We often suggest doing the filling in the appropriate color (pink or blue…or both!!)…but sometimes the client requests the cake itself to be the color of the baby’s gender, like the one pictured below. (Laine Johnson Photography- for her VERY OWN gender reveal!) What a fun and memorable way to get everyone involved and make a SWEET memory!

Who Loves Cupcakes, Contests, and Charity? We Do!!

Cupcake Camp is a non profit event that is benefiting a Dallas-based medical organization with a mission to help children around the world.

At Cupcake Camp, you pay a small admission fee ($10 for adults/$5 for kids) and get to indulge in interesting cupcake flavors from around the Metroplex. We will be donating 240 cupcakes in fun and exciting flavors. We also plan on entering the contest with some new and experimental flavors we have been working on! It will be a great day to eat yummy food, socialize, and help those in need.

Recently at Sweet Art Bakery we’ve been impressed with the amount of attention Moms have been giving to cakes and sweets for their kids’ parties and have asked that anyone who wants to can send in pics of their parties for us to see. We miss our cakes after they leave us!! So I’m jumpin’ on the bandwagon myself and featuring my own Emily’s 6th birthday ROYGBIV bash! Right about now is when I regret not asking for a new camera for Christmas, but who am I kidding, I’d rather have cake decorating gadgets or a massage certificate. So- please pretend that I have a fancy schmancy camera and know how to take pics from odd and interesting angles with the backgrounds all artfully blurred out.

First things first- THE Cake! I had about 1 million ideas on how to carry out the theme through the cake, but settled on this one. The flower girlied it up a bit, I thought. (Oh- and the inside is rainbow striped, too!)

For the other sweets on the sweets table I made rainbow colored cake pops, and the most time consuming Jello cups ever! (note to anyone else who wants to do this- do NOT tackle the Jello on the DAY OF the party- it seriously is an all day project!- oh and maybe not the same weekend you have 4 weddings to deliver to). I purchased some sour fruit rainbow striped candy and figured I’d throw the fruit skewers on this table as well- maybe to balance out some of the sinfully sugary treats?

For the other food, Grandma contributed salad, the other grandma brought orzo, and I made chicken salad sandwiches. All of this was only because we could not exist on color coordinated snacks in the plastic tubs alone! The random snacks in there really did go over pretty well and looked cool. I 86ed the purple bucket though because I was truly stumped on a snack to go into it.

Biggest hit with this goofy 6 year old set was the drink station (thanks, Pinterest!) They had the most fun mixing the different colored juices to come up with their own weird concoction.

There was water available, too- which had nifty labels attached that I got from Heather at www.chickabug.com . She also did the invitations for us- and we loved them!

All in all it was a very fun first-time-to-invite-friends-from-school party. This OCD mama is definitely glad it’s over, but I cherished this one- I thnk this is the last one Emily is going to give me control over planning… can’t wait to see what she has in store for next year. and far as anyone that’s thinking of doing a ROYGBIV party themselves- holler at me- I have tons of stuff I can give ya- and 999,999 more ideas for a rainbow decorated cake!

Not Your Mama’s Backyard Birthday Bash!

Seems as if parties lately have elevated themselves to an epic event sending DIY Mommies into a Pinterest induced tizzy, who have spent countless hours scouring Etsy for the ultimate invitations, goodie bags, banners and labels…and we LOOOOVE it!! Because THOSE parties need equally fabulous cakes and sweet treats to adorn the meticulously executed cake tables.

Meet GRAYSON…

This sweet little bugger just turned one. His Mama called us late in the game, but we jumped at the chance to make his smash cake, cupcakes, and cake pops. I mean- look at that face- how could we refuse!! (OK- so we hadn’t seem him before these adorable pics- but c’mon…FIRST birthdays only happen once…and this one had all the signs of being over the top !)

The smash cake is banana, covered in fondant, and decorated to match the birthday logo. We even did our best to write the birthday message in the same font! Grayson’s Mommy provided the paper picks for the white almond cupcakes (and ridiculously cute galvanized tiered stand!) as well as made the holders for our chocolate cake pops. We think the whole look is just fab!

Funny how some kids dive in head first while others are a tad more…well…skeptical? of the cake!

A little bit of vintage, and a whole lot of Sweets!

Sweet Art Bakery had a wonderful time on Sunday sharing our sweets with hundreds of brides-to-be at the Plano Bridal Show! Our fun booth was chock full of vintage charm, because of our friends Brandi at Pocket Full of Heirlooms and Vince at Good Look Inc.

We had so much fun designing show cakes to fit in perfectly with our booth! One of my new favorite cakes features guilded Girl Scout Cookies cascading down a 3 tier square cake. The cake may have ended up with a few extra cookies if we hadn’t stopped to snack on them while we put it together!

If you are getting married, or know someone who is, but couldn’t make it out to the Plano show to see us, don’t worry! We will be setting up another amazing display at the Frisco Heritage Center’s wedding show at the end of the month. We would love to see you there!

Starting September 1st, yep- SEPTEMBER- “National Food Safety Month” (ha!)- the new Texas Cottage Food Law goes into effect. What has been illegal up until now will become legal. HOME BAKING BUSINESSES. Please get to know your “baker”, folks! New home based businesses are not allowed to be inspected by the health department, not required to have liability insurance, not asked to take any food handling courses, not mandated or even encouraged to install a grease trap to protect the city’s water system. Remember- one person’s idea of cleanliness in their kitchen is different than another person’s. If you choose to have the “cake lady” down the street make your next cake, please think twice, and call us!

It’s a GIRL!!

Wow- we’ve been in business for quite a while now, and we were finally asked for the very first time to make a precious gender reveal cake! About two weeks ago, Mama-to-be, Kelly called with the request, but I had to wait until the next Monday for her sonogram results to know if I was making a pink or a blue cake… We were so excited to be a part of the special “reveal”…the couple looks so happy- congrats to you both!
(BTW- pink or blue is made with our super yummy white almond cake and a little bit of gel coloring. Anyone want to challenge us with pink and blue marble for twins??)

Learn Something New Every Day…

And for my staff- the weekend was FULL of learning! We were so excited to have the opportunity to try new things this weekend! This is why my “job” is so exciting Kristin had a FUN time (tongue in cheek) tackling a fondant camo cake- tried a few different techniques, but settled on one that made us happy. Robin crafted turrets and had the maddening task of creating gumpaste cones- but they turned out sooo pretty! Amanda sparred with ganache and won!!! I recently bought some new stencils and was able to use them on a baby shower cake- LOVE the way they turned out. Giraffe, zebra, and cheetah! We all grew as decorators this weekend and look forward to more challenges!
